Amongst many brides to be, this is something that often goes unchecked! Yet with so many things on our mind, our health is often neglected. However, there is truth to the saying ‘healthy body-healthy mind’. Looking after yourself, both physically and mentally is the secret to a happier you.

Planning a wedding is ranked in the top 3 most stressful things a person can do in their life, next to buying a house and losing a loved one. And when the going gets tough, your mind and body need to be fuelled up and ready to roar!

Check out these suggestions for a healthier, stress-free you before and on the big day.

1. Eat right
During stressful situations it is especially important to stock up on those antioxidants, so tuck into plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Chose nutrient dense foods such as wholegrain breads and cereals, lean meat and fish, and low fat dairy. Some people do not feel like eating during stressful times, but eating right should be a priority to get you through challenging times and fit for the day. Eat regular and don’t starve yourself to lose weight. This could lead to health consequences and leave you feeling lethargic and dizzy.

2. Exercise
What bride doesn’t want to look her best on the day? Make exercise a routine in your life. Regular exercise keeps you healthy and clears your head. Exercise will keep you in shape, help you shift a few kilos and importantly-release those stress-busting endorphins! So start walking with a friend or take your dog for a long walk, go for a swim, do some yoga or take a class at your gym, it will all make a difference to your overall health.

3. Water
You will need plenty of water to keep you hydrated and helps eliminate toxins from your body. Drinking 8 glasses a day keeps your hair, nails and skin glowing. Keep a bottle of water with you and sip away at it throughout the day.

4. Sleep
Counting our zzzz’s while we sleep is essential for good performance, concentration, emotions and overall functioning. Aim for 8 hours a night to boost your immune system and tackle any complications on the way. Exercise and good nutrition will help you get a good night’s sleep.

5. Play time
Ensure you get time for yourself. To every Ying, there’s a Yang. That’s right - balance is the key to a healthy mind. Sure, that never ending list of things to do is hanging above you but you will get there step-by-step. It is important that you take time to relax. Have a massage, get your hair or nails done, go shopping or for lunch with your friends. Don’t let wedding plans totally consume you.

6. Realistic
You want your big day to be perfect and have high expectations. However, don’t lose sense of realism and accept that it is inevitable that some things don’t go according to plan. Laugh, breathe, and take time to think! Ensure you don’t react and stress yourself out. Learn to deal with hurdles along the way. Be flexible, realistic and don’t let it ruin your day.
