A Lasting Memory
By make-up artist Wendy Kwei
Have you ever noticed someone with a pale face and tanned body? It looks so unnatural and it is the last thing you will want on
your wedding day. Unfortunately, there’s bad news. Often you can’t tell until it is too late. In person it looks fine, but it shows up in
photos. It is caused by the combination of the make-up you use and flash photography.
The good news is it can be avoided if you know what to look for. The key step is to understand the relationship between sunscreen
and flash photography. When sunscreen is present in your base (moisturiser and/or foundation) it can react with the flash and
cause the pale face effect. While it’s essential not to avoid sunscreen, you do need to carefully choose which sunscreen layers to
use when you’re being photographed. Two sunscreen ingredients commonly used are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and these
are the main offenders. Try to keep these ingredients to a minimum on your big day. Mineral make-up is becoming very popular,
but be careful, because these two ingredients are included in high proportions in many mineral foundations.
Every look takes effort and careful consideration. The effort that goes into creating a natural look should not be underestimated.
For brides often it’s about layering a few products that individually cannot be detected. Whether you do your own or engage a
make-up artist, just be certain that the make-up you use is flash friendly.
