Storage
If you plan to keep your wedding gown as an heirloom, and
pass it on to your family, it is very important to have the
dress made, laundered and stored in the best possible way.
As a general rule, silk, wool, linen and other natural fibres
preserve very well if kept in an airtight box and packaged
in acid-free tissue paper which will not stain the fabric.
The garments should be cleaned professionally before being
packed away. The box should be sealed with plastic to prevent
moths and other insects from gaining access.
Fabric Shopping Tips
As a couturier, my favourite retail places to shop for fabrics
in Sydney include:
Saigon Fabrics - 78 Erskine
Street, Sydney.
Friendly and helpful service, a fabulous range of silks, laces
and beaded fabrics, this two storey family-run store right
near Wynyard Station is the first stop to look for bridal
fabrics. The staff can also help with recommending dressmakers
in your local area, and are full of expert advice when it
comes to different fabrics and what is right for your design.
A lovely, peaceful place to browse and get ideas!
Fabric Fantasy - 110 Commonwealth
St, Surry Hills.
With fabrics from Italy, France and Germany on offer, this
warehouse in the inner city is a treasure trove for fabric
lovers. Specializing in exquisite beaded laces and embroidered
silks, it also gathers end-of-roll fabrics from top designers
such as Versace, Valentino, etc. There are so many fabrics
here that simply cannot be found anywhere else! Lots of prints
and daywear fabrics too.
Greenfields - 36 Ann St, Surry Hills
Although strictly speaking this is a wholesale warehouse,
the public can buy fabrics here too if you are willing to
buy more than a couple of metres. Great cheap deals on basic
polyester fabrics such as tulle, satins, organza, chiffons,
etc. Also selling all kinds of trims, cottons, zips, buttons,
etc, which must be bought in bulk. Be prepared to jostle as
it is always crowded with industry customers.
Cabramatta
Allow yourself a whole day to visit Cabramatta, in Sydney’s
south-west, for its dozens of small family-run fabric stores
that line the streets with bargains galore! Although sometimes
the quality can be a little doubtful, it is great for Asian
textiles and cheaper embroideries and beaded fabrics. Cabramatta
always has a lot to offer, and is also a great place for a
delicious Vietnamese lunch!
I hope this information is helpful and explains
some of the mystery surrounding bridal fabrics and textile
terminology. If you have any queries, don’t hesitate
to contact me for advice … happy shopping!
